Training Course of the US Federal Trade Commission Representatives for KNUTE Students

General Information

In the period from 17 November to 7 December 2016 a training course on market analysis and competition policy for KNUTE students majoring in Management in the sphere of economic competition was held in KNUTE at the support of the Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine. John Hilk, Stewart Hirshfeld and Stephen Lyutsiv, representatives of the Federal Trade Commission (USA) and the Competition Bureau (Canada), were the lecturers. They shared their knowledge and experience in the protection of competition area with students.

The course consisted of four lectures and two training sessions regarding such topics:

- Practical application of economic theories of welfare;

- Research of relevant market limits (through the example of Staples concentration cases)";

- Entry barriers and market: the analysis content and tools;

- Antitrust policy of vertical mergers;

- The distortion of competition in the markets, conspiracy;

- Analysis of competition in electricity markets.

Lecturers, guided by their personal experience, told the students about the basic principles of market research and violation investigations, explained what kinds of research and investigation tools should be applied to different violations. During the training sessions students were able to apply this knowledge to game situations based on specific cases considered by the US Federal Trade Commission. Among these situations there were the most famous cases of the past, as well as some interesting cases of violations or concentrations that occurred in the US market during 2016.

Students and teachers of KNUTE Economic Theory and Competition Policy Department are sincerely grateful to the American colleagues for providing such an interesting and useful course and the Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine for the help in its organization.
