E-commerce under Control of Young Consumers

General Information

March 15, 2017 on the World Consumer Rights Day the Round table on How to Protect Consumer Rights in the Times of Online Trading was held at UNIAN Information Agency.

The All-Ukrainian Association “Pulse” and Kyiv National University of Trade and Economics invited the experts interested in the subject to take part in the Round table and discuss urgent and pressing issues in the field of consumer protection in E-commerce.

Among the participants there were representatives of the authorities, public, educational institutions, trade networks.

Over 3 bln people, or 40% of the world population are currently using digital technologies, while in 1995 it was only 1%. The demand on E-commerce is rising with the same speed and as a result new forms of competitive advantages appear that result in more frauds and cyber criminals.

“50% of citizens complains in the field of consumer protection that reach the central apparatus of the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection concern E-commerce”, according to Volodymyr Lapa, the Head of the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection.

During the Round table Liliia Styrenko, the interim deputy head of the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection confirmed that the non-food segment  is especially popular among offenders. She added “There is no clear legal regulation of activity of enterprises which are not identified as ‘classical’ sellers (retailers), so they are beyond the legal jurisdiction on consumer protection, do not have the burden of obeying the rights of consumer for information about the seller, goods that are sold and services provided”.

The initiative group of the public movement “Youth for the Rights of Consumers” presented the research dedicated to the importance of full and faithful information about the seller. The movement’s activists showed the results of monitoring of consumers information quality at 50 online shops of Ukraine according to their popularity in Google search engine and the analysis of their compliance with the legislation requirements in the field of consumer protection. Most of Ukrainian enterprises do not comply with a lot of norms and regulations. Even though the activists named five companies whose results were the best, there is still much to be done in this area.
