Iana Scvarovscaia Selected as Winner of Multilingual Essay Contest

General Information

ELS Educational Services, Inc., is pleased to announce that, from a pool of over 2,000 entrants, Iana Scvarovscaia was one of 60 students from 27 countries and representing 57 universities to be selected as a winner of the 2017 Many Languages, One World® international essay contest.

2017 is the fourth year ELS Educational Services and the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) have sponsored Many Languages, One World. This year ELS and the UNAI also welcome Northeastern University as the host of the Many Languages, One World Global Youth Forum and the sponsor and organizer of the Northeastern University Global Youth Symposium.

Scvarovscaia attended the Many Languages, One World Global Youth Forum and Northeastern University Global Youth Symposium in Boston, Massachusetts. Scvarovscaia was provided with an all-expense-paid trip to Boston and New York City and the opportunity to speak at the General Assembly of the United Nations. On 21 July, 2017, Scvarovscaia and the other winners presented action plans related to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The Many Languages, One World contest challenged students around the globe to write their essays in one of the six official languages of the United Nations, that is neither the contestants’ first language (language(s) spoken at home) nor the medium of instruction in either their primary or secondary education, or a medium of instruction if attending a bilingual school. Entrants were asked to write an essay that reflected their personal, academic, cultural and national context and discussed global citizenship and cultural understanding and the role that multilingual ability can play in fostering these. The official languages of the United Nations are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish.

Scvarovscaia, who is originally from Moldova, studies International Economics at Kyiv National University of Trade and Economics in Ukraine. For the contest, Scvarovscaia wrote her essay in Russian.

In 2017, more than 6,000 students and sponsors from 170 countries participated in the initial phase of this contest. Students who participated are pursuing undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees.
