First Forum for English Teachers “Education for the New Generation: Teaching and Learning in the Fresh New Way”

General Information

On November 2-3, Kyiv National University of Trade and Economics was proud to host the First Forum for English Teachers “Education for the New Generation: Teaching and Learning in the Fresh New Way”. The event was organized under the initiative of the Foreign Philology and Translation Department and with support of external partners Pearson Learning Company and Dinternal-Books.

The opening speech was given by Professor A. Mazaraki, the Rector of KNUTE. He welcomed conference participants and said that joining efforts, knowledge and experience on the international level is essential and ensures synergetic positive effect on improvement of education, cultural interaction, development of society and state policy. He wished the participants cooperation and successful decisions. Representatives of the Ministry of Education and Science and invited guests also addressed the audience.

Scholars as well as teachers-practitioners from the UK, Poland, Japan and leading Ukrainian higher educational institutions took part in the Forum.

During the first day of the event experts in the field of education expressed their thoughts and opinions concerning perspectives and future of foreign language learning.

Doctor Piotr Steinbrich, a lecturer and teacher trainer at the Catholic University of Lublin (Poland) in his report on the 21 Century Skills in the English Classroom focused on the analysis of Neuropedagogy research, positive psychology and processes that take place while learning a foreign language. He also emphasized the importance of modern technologies, that we deal with on a daily basis, forms of everyday digital activity used by students for learning purposes.

Mykola Skyba, the expert of Education Programme by the Ukrainian Institute for the Future, in his speech on Education for the Turbulent World: How to Live, Teach and Learn in the Times of Change presented the best educational models in the world and gave some practical tips on how to make the teaching process more interesting and effective.

Michael Hudson and Colm Smyth, experts in Applied Linguistics, during their speech The Global Scale of English: Getting the Measure of your English Ability told the Forum participants about the Scale and its great practical benefit to both teachers and learners of English. The Global Scale of English (GSE) is the first truly global standard for measuring English language proficiency, enabling learners to accurately score, track and communicate their language skills on a granular scale of 10-90. 25 years in the making, it is the most academically robust and precise form of English language assessment to have ever been developed and has been tested on over 10,000 students in over 130 countries.

Scott Windeatt (the UK), a supervisor of MA and PhD students in the field of Internet and Computer-Assisted Language Learning,  addressed the audience in his video-greeting. He emphasized that a rapid technological development requires the use of new innovative methods and strategies in learning.

On the second day of the Forum there were various interactive specialized panels prepared by foreign and Ukrainian experts in order to share and exchange innovative work experiences. The topics of the panels were as follows:

  1. Online Learning
  2. Testing and Assessing Language Skills
  3. Teachers’ Resources for Young and Adult Learners.

During two days of the Forum discussions concerning modern and future tendencies in the English language teaching and learning systems were ongoing.

Ukrainian and foreign experts were actively sharing and exchanging opinions, ideas and their experience.
